Packing List

2010 Dominican Republic Mission Trip Packing List

  • T-shirts – NO spaghetti straps, tanks, no beaters!  Necklines should be conservative (girls)

  • Shorts (not all gym shorts because you will want to wear nicer shorts when we go to church during the week) – ALL SHORTS MUST COME TO AT LEAST MID THIGH!

  • Towels (bath), washcloths, etc. (There will be beach and bath towels available at the resort)

  • Pajamas (it can sometimes get a little cool at night)

  • Swimsuit (for showering in Elias Piña & for resort)

  • Sweatshirt or light weight jacket

  • Jeans (only if you want)

  • Dress clothes – long pants & nice shirt for guys & skirt, dress or dress slacks for girls -  if tank style, please bring a sweater to cover shoulders when in church (Holy Thursday & Easter Vigil)

  • Tennis shoes – for work projects

  • Sandals

  • Toiletries – shampoo, soap, etc.

  • Sunscreen – A MUST – SPF 30 suggested!!

  • Aloe – in case of sunburns!!

  • Insect Repellent – Another MUST!

  • Any medications you will need

  • Anti-bacterial hand soap and/or anti-bacterial wipes

  • Toilet paper – at least 2 rolls

  • Water bottle (I would suggest bringing 2)

  • Backpack

  • Journal

  • Flashlight

  • Paint brush (1 or 2) and/or roller

  • Passport – please make a copy & keep one at home and send a copy with Ms Simon

  • Camera

  • Lock for your suitcase - optional

  • Pictures of your family to share with DR family and some American music

  • Gifts for your family – suggestions would be chocolates, Rubbermaid containers, sheets, towels, etc.

  • Snacks – granola bars, fruit snacks, etc (most students find they need things like this because the families do not have things like this in their homes)

  • Flavor sugars for water – students found this helped them get enough water in each day!  Students can get dehydrated quickly if they do not drink enough water!

  • Spending Money - $10 to get tourist card  & no more than $75-$100 (there is a bakery and ice cream store in town – students tend to spend maybe a $1-$2/day on this – there are souvenirs sold at the resort as well as horseback riding, hair braiding, etc.) We will experience “the Market” in Elias Piña, but there isn’t much there to buy – it is mostly food and clothing for the people in town to buy. One of the families in Elias Piña has a manicure business & some of the girls spent money there as well.

You are allowed one suitcase that has to weigh less than 50 lbs.  You can bring a carry-on with you (probably your back pack).  Please follow guidelines for liquids in your carry-on.  Each student will also check a bag filled with supplies to be given to parish and school.  If you have an extra suitcase that you would like to use for this, please bring to Xavier by Friday, March 19 to be filled.  If you do not have an extra suitcase, we have extras (they do not all have wheels, but you do not have to carry them very far!!)

PLEASE HAVE A BLACK PEN IN YOUR CARRY ON FOR FILLING OUT IMMIGRATION FORMS!
